Built
in 1934, the property at 56 St. George Street is one of the more modern
buildings. The city was founded in 1565 by the Spanish, and the majority
of the commercial and private downtown buildings reflect the influence
of diverse cultures throughout its long history. The central
air-conditioned and heated, two-story, 2,688 square-foot building seats
88. The slab foundation sits on a 34X58 lot. The exterior is cinderblock
with a coquina finish on the facade. A block wall bordering the front of
the property, additionally finished with a coquina surface, separates
the patio from the main street. This area provides extra space for the
buyer to creatively develop. There is a main entry door and one
double-hatched entry, which could be adapted as a second entrance, on
the front of the structure. Large windows and a shelved display window
add to the overall character and marketing possibilities of the
property.
Upon entering the building, a custom-made spiral staircase winds its way to the upstairs level and offices, storage, and bathroom facilities. There is also a spacious room that opens onto the balcony. A roof made of cedar-shake protects the second-story balcony and makes this is an ideal venue from which to observe the festive, historically-inspired parades and events held throughout the year. (It was even the site of two customers' marriage ceremony!) If guests prefer not to ascend the spiral stairs, a second set of stairs to the rear of the building will take them to the upper floor. Should the spiral staircase not be taken, then entry through the front door and beyond will lead to the lounge area, dining room, kitchen, and the additional stairway. Stained glass panels are hung and backlit throughout the building, while a large piece is naturally illuminated by the window on the traditional stairway's landing. A downstairs rear door provides access directly to the kitchen area for deliveries. An exterior stairway also leads to an upstairs storage/office area. Deliveries are made through both the front and back entrances. The building does not have its own private parking, but spaces are available for rent. As with all St. George businesses, patrons may park in any of the surrounding lots for a reasonable fee or on neighboring streets. The local hotel, motels, and B &B inns are within walking distance of 56 St. George Street, and additional transportation may be provided by taxis, limousines, sightseeing trains, or courtesy shuttles. Special arrangements can also be made to reach a destination by horse and carriage.
